Migraine headaches do not always necessitate a prescribed or nonprescription medicine. Migraines may be healed, or at least weakened, by using home remedies for migraines. More generally called alternative medicine, home solutions are not complicated chemical fixes, but instead common sense and general knowledge.
1. Ice Pack or Ice Wrap
The first of home remedies for migraines is actually inexpensive and can be picked up at drug or general stores. Ice wraps are commonly used to relieve migraine headaches. The kind at the store is designed to be put on the neck or forehead. Alternatively, if ice wraps are not available or if they are found to be too expensive, the home-made version is an acceptable solution.
Run a decent amount of water into a towel, then squeeze some of the water out, but not all of it. Fold the towel so that it can be placed in the freezer, and leave it in for five minutes, or until the towel starts to become stiff. Unfold the towel and then fold it again, keeping the already-frozen part in the middle of the towel, and the parts that are still wet on the outside. When it has become acceptably frozen, put it around the head and eyes.
2. Eat Salt
The second of home remedies for migraines is to consume salt. It has been found that, when a migraine is in its beginning stages, eating salty foods such as certain potato chips, or french fries with salt, will lessen the intensity of the migraine. This solution may or may not stop the migraine, but it does allow time to prepare the frozen towel as described above.
3. Head/Scalp Massage
If a second person is available, this third treatment for home remedies for migraines may help. Relax in a dark room while someone massages your scalp. Be sure to massage the head, not the temples. A helpful addition to this method is to add the ice pack or towel as outlined above. Ten minutes of massaging should be sufficient, but if this does not help, then other alternatives should be sought.
