These days, with so much on-demand entertainment available, it's hard to organize a party that people will actually show up to and enjoy. It's sad, but it's the truth: most people would rather sit home and watch TV than go out to a party. But there's still hope - you just need to host one great party to get people exciting about attending more. Below you will find some great party planning ideas for all types of gatherings.

1. Host a Picnic. It might seem weird, but a picnic or outdoor gathering can almost be the best thing for all those TV watchers... at least it gets them out of the house! The easiest way to have a picnic is to chose a spot where you want to meet (a lake, park, meadow, or even your backyard), and have a barbecue or potluck. Whether you're planning a birthday party, a holiday celebration, or just a get-together with friends, try taking it outside!

2. Put Together a Movie Night. While a movie night is not exactly original, there's a reason for that: it's so much fun people want to do it all the time. Schedule a night to get together with friends and just throw a movie on. Try to select a film that is either brand new, has a theme (like "horror movie night" or "James Bond movie night") or very old. It's generally best if it's something that most people either haven't seen or haven't seen in a long time. If you want, you can do a trip down memory lane type party and play "oldies," like movies in black and white and a marathon of early TV shows. "I Love Lucy," anyone?

3. Take a Gamble on a Poker or Board Game Party. If you're just planning a party or get together with friends, you could always host a poker party or a silly board game night. You hardly have to do anything at all to get people having fun. Just provide a few snacks and drag out your playing cards or that old board game collection. This is one of many party planning ideas that would probably work better with an adult audience rather than children-- unless you happen to have kids who love to gamble.

4. Arrange a Beach Party. If you live anywhere near the ocean or a lake (or even a river), then a beach party is something you want to do at least a few times this summer. Actually, you can really head out to the beach at any time of year as long as you're properly bundled up. For the grown-ups, bring something "fun" to drink (cool drinks like sangria or cold beer in the summer, and warming ones like spiked hot chocolate in the cooler months). Then plan to light a campfire after it gets dark. These types of parties work for pretty much any age group, and are a ton of fun no matter what kind of weather you end up with.

5. Splash out With a Pool Party. If you or someone you know owns a pool, getting together for a pool party is an excellent idea. Obviously this would work better in the summer months, but I guess it all depends on how adventurous you are! (After all, some people swim in the Arctic!) Be sure to load up on snacks for a pool party, and it's a good idea to have some other form of entertainment for people who do not want to swim. Also, since you will be at the mercy of the weather, be sure to have a backup plan and always be prepared for the worst: that is, a thunderstorm.

These are just a few of my favorite party planning ideas. The real trick is figuring out what type of party your friends will like. But remember... while not every type of party will be fit for everybody, your friends will be excited to spend time with you no matter what you decide to do or how much money you spend doing it. After all, that's the point of planning a party in the first place, right?
