People who have migraine headaches for 15 days or more out of each month, for 3 consecutive months, are classified as suffering from chronic migraines. The disorder is also known as transformed migraine, and is thought to be caused in part, by enlarged blood vessels in the head. Due to the frequency with which these migraine headaches occur, they are particularly difficult to endure.
Along with the intense pain, there are also several other symptoms that accompany these headaches. The pulsating pain is usually confined to one side of the head, but the effects of it, are felt throughout the entire body. The throbbing is many times so severe, that persons are unable to function normally, and, a headache can last for up to 72 hours.
Chronic migraine sufferers, also become sensitive to light, smell and noise. They also experience nausea, vomiting, or both. Other classic symptoms relate to vision. Vision becomes blurred, and many report seeing black spots or bright lights before a headache begins, or while it is going on. Consequently, it becomes painful for them to do normal everyday activities.
Chronic migraine can be treated using over-the-counter medication, or prescription drugs. It is normally recommended that all migraine medication be taken with care, as the body can become overmedicated due to the frequency with which migraines can occur. If this happens, the drugs become ineffective, causing headaches to come back almost as soon as there is no medication in the body.
It is highly recommend, that persons who suffer from chronic migraines seek out preventive remedies. In an effort to determine which remedies are best, persons are often asked to write down when headaches occur, and what are the environmental and physical factors that were taking place at the time. This is done in an effort to identify the possible triggers, and put the necessary treatment in place.
Some causal factors that contribute to chronic migraine are: certain types of food, stress, weather conditions, alcohol, and insufficient sleep, among others. By taking note of these factors each time a headache occurs, it is possible to identify the cause, and thereby reduce the likelihood of it coming back.
In addition to the use of prescription drugs, supplements such as coenzyme Q10, (CoQ10), are also recommended for chronic migraine. It has been proven, that many persons who suffer from the disorder are deficient in this nutrient. In studies published by the American Family Physician journal in 2005, CoQ10 was found to reduce chronic migraines in 50% of sufferers. The use of certain beta-blockers and anti-depressants, has also provided relief for persons suffering with chronic migraines.
More than just a headache, chronic migraine is a very crippling disorder that afflicts many persons worldwide. A migraine headache tends to intensify the longer it lasts, and is also very painful. The ill-effects leave you feeling tired and weak, causing you to retreat from social interaction. If you have a headache that tends to last for several days at time, then visit your physician, it might turn out to be more than you think.
