Ed hitched up his pants. He'd always been a snappy dresser but now his clothes didn't fit right. He pushed the shopping cart, following his wife down the grocery aisle in search of diverticulitis foods. He was angry at having something the matter with him; he wasn't used to it. And he thought that the doctor and his wife of 27 years were taking it too calmly.
"You'll want a lot of fiber, the doctor said 25 to 35 grams," said Claire, his wife, who'd had a bothersome heart her whole life and thought Ed was making a fuss. She had studied the leaflets about diverticulitis foods, committing the food types and values to memory. "But you'll have to ease into it. You don't want to get gas," she added.
Ed wished she'd keep her voice down. He picked up a bag of Granny Smith apples and put it in the cart.
Claire added a bag of pears. "These have 3 grams of fiber each," she said. "So does half a cup of spinach. Maybe we should both eat like this." She gave Ed her beauty queen smile to cheer him up. He shrugged a little and almost smiled back. She led the way down the next aisle and stopped in front of rows of canned beans - kidney beans, black beans, navy beans, mixed beans.
"Eight grams per cup, right?" said Ed. Claire nodded, adding the cans to the cart. "Some beans, some spinach, some apples - that will add up nicely." she said. "Oh! And whole-wheat bread, I almost forgot. And whole-wheat pasta, too, you'll love that, Ed."
They cruised the bakery aisle. Ed picked up a loaf of whole wheat bread with sesame seeds and the muffin had nuts. "Isn't there something about avoiding seeds and nuts?" he asked.
"No, that's an old rumor, not true," Claire said. "Let's get a couple of loaves of that bread; we can freeze one. Oh, look, there's the muffins." Claire headed for the muffins and ran smack into their neighbour, Janet, who eyed their cart while they exchanged greetings.
"My, you're eating so healthy!" Janet said. "Look at all these fruits and veggies!"
"I have to be careful of my heart, you know," said Claire. "Poor Ed, he has to share my meals, but he's so good about it."
Janet smiled at Ed acknowledging, as some women did, that he was a great catch. Ed smiled his usual modest, happily married smile.
Later, at the cash, Ed bagged while Claire paid. As they walked to the car, he whispered to her, "Prunes?"
"Oh, they're for me," Claire whispered back. "But I'll share with you if you like." She gave him her beauty queen smile again. "They're full of fiber."
This time Ed smiled back. He was feeling a little better about things. Diverticulitis foods had turned out to be much more edible than he'd expected. And women were still smiling at him.
