There are many ways by which love can be defined. Different contexts put different meanings into what we usually see as a simple word. If we will try to look into how we have answered "define love", we cannot think of a single word to interpret it. Defining love, for us, can be more than words.
Unlike in the English language, others use multiple words to describe what love truly is. Some also interpret love by providing words that are exact opposites of the term (for instance, love is not hate). At times, it is also being contrasted with lust. Furthermore, different types of love were also conceptualized to interpret it.
Types of love
When looking at definitions of love, there are such categories as Impersonal and Interpersonal love. The first one is used to describe love for specific objects, for a goal, or for a principle. In other cases, this can also be used to describe the love extended by volunteer workers to those who are in need. On the other hand, the second one is interpreted as love between human beings like: love between brothers or sisters; love between family members; love between man and woman; love between friends.
Other than the categories mentioned above, there are yet three types of love that we must look into. One is called the eros love, which is also used to define erotic or romantic love. It is actually based on strong feelings between one person and another from the opposite sex. This love is basically dependent on physical traits and is considered weak because it is usually based on self-benefit.
The next type is called the philos love, or the love that emanates from friendship between two people. Philos may often lead to eros especially for those who believe that friendship is a strong foundation of romantic ties. In most cases, philos love leads to successful marriages, work relations and even family relationships.
The last type of love is called the agape (pure love), otherwise known as unconditional love. It is unconditional because it is selfless and may happen between two persons where one offers love for the other without asking anything in return. This can happen by helping persons who have hurt you. Of course, this type of love includes that mother and child bond. Not to forget, God's unconditional love for men. Despite living in sin, God sent His only begotten son, Jesus Christ, to save the world. This is considered the highest form of love.
Symbols of love
The many forms of love brought about many symbols attached to it. Love symbols are being used to speak much about how one feels for the other. In most cases, different cultures provide symbols depending on how they interpret the term as well. In Hebrew, for instance, a symbol for love is called the "ahava".
