Ideal or optimum weight is the weight that you maintain when you have a healthy approach while exercising and eating and your body stays at a constant weight. Finding out the 'perfect' weight is generally difficult for people and this is because everyone's body is unique. People sometimes have a larger bone structure, some may have a smaller bone structure, some people may have different amounts of muscle mass and the distribution of weight may be different. Due to these differences in the body structure, it is not very accurate if you use any tool to help determine if someone is overweight or underweight.

There is a universally accepted method which is used to find out a person's optimum weight and this method is called body mass index or BMI. BMI employs certain mathematical equations to determine the ideal weight. The person's height and weight are taken into consideration when calculating BMI. It is seen that BMI does not take into account if the weight is from a bone or fat or muscle etc. So again, BMI should not be taken as the absolute truth. It does give a fairly accurate number, but if the person knows that they eat healthy and exercise daily and that they are at their ideal weight then they can ignore the BMI. The reason this happens is as a person eats healthier and exercises regularly, their muscle mass increases and this larger amount of muscle throws off the BMI calculation and so it does not apply in these cases.

But in most of the cases, people can trust the BMI and it will give a pretty accurate representation of the person's ideal weight. Also note that BMI calculations work best for ages from 18 to 65 and is not considered accurate for professional athletes, pregnant women or someone with a particular chronic illness.
