If she's not leaving pictures of rings up on the computer or leaving magazines open to a page with her ideal diamond, you'll have to be a little observant.

Just like you guys have different taste in beer; girls have different taste in jewelry. When selecting a beer, the brand matters, maybe the size of the can, whether it's a can or a bottle, cheap or expensive, dark or light. Jewelry for a girl isn't much different. All you have to do is size out her style and you'll be sure to pick out the perfect ring.

Girls have a tendency to be drawn to either gold or silver. That's the perfect place to start observing. Notice which one she wears. Gold tends to look better on darker skin tones; however, this isn't a rule; you have to be observant to figure this one out. If she wears both compliment her on a piece of jewelry and say "Wow, that gold necklace looks great on you, don't you always wear silver?" or "you seem to always wear gold?" or whatever it may be. You're thoughtful observance mixed with a little cluelessness won't give your motive away.

If it turns out that she's a gold kind of girl, you're probably going to want to go with a high carat such as 18k because it will be more durable and last longer. If she tends to favor silver then you'll most likely be choosing between white gold and platinum. Platinum is going to be more expensive but it's the most durable so if it's within you're budget it's definitely worth looking into. You want the to not only be beautiful but to be able to endure years and years of everyday wear.

Next take some mental notes on the style of jewelry she wears. Is it vintage? Modern? Simple? Always over the top? This will help you narrow down the styles when you're looking. If she always wears big, gawky jewelry, you may need to get her a larger style diamond such as an asscher or a princess cut. If she's simpler and wears smaller jewelry, maybe a marquise cut is the way to go. (Don't worry if you have no idea what these are, you'll learn about them later).

Does her jewelry or clothes always match? If it does, you may want to find a ring that has a matching wedding band.

It's the little details like this that are worth taking the time to notice first rather than just picking out something you think she'll like. The little extra effort can help give you the "take her breath away" moment you're hoping for.
