Marketing our businesses can cost us a fortune; however, with the wrong marketing not only can it cost us a huge amount, but we end up with nothing in return. This can be the straw that broke the camels back for a lot of companies who are cash poor today! But without doing anything we will also fail. So before spending our budget we need to research and find the best way to spend our hard earned buck.
Tip 1 - Network: I know this can sometimes be a bit tedious but all it costs is a couple of hours of your time, I was at an event recently to interview some small companies, about 100 or so companies turned up to the event. All sorts from printers, lease car dealers to IT specialists. There was also a plumber at the event, he told me that they get all of their business from these "do's" and he is overloaded with work. Would you believe it? Well it is true. So hunt out a local business network group and get yourself involved.
Tip 2 - Speak at an industry event: Well again this could be amazing if handled properly. Search out any event that is in your line of work; offer to do a talk on a subject. As an example I was at Excel recently for new business start-ups. A website company gave a 30 minute talk on how to buy a good domain name. I had never heard of them before but now I use them all the time. If you are nervous about standing up in front of people get one of your friends who love to be in the limelight to do it for you. You prepare the talk but get then to deliver the presentation (and you could be available to answer any difficult questions).
Tip 3 - Use Local Companies: Contact any local small to medium sized companies and shops to see if you can offer an exclusive discount to their employees. Companies like to offer perks to their employees such as shopping discounts from various local businesses or money off percentages for a service.
Tip 4 - Buddy up: Now you really need to get your thinking caps on. Think of a way to buddy up with another company to give the client a better experience. An example of this might be a theatre package, where the client gets a meal and a theatre ticket for an all inclusive price at a discount- if you are a restaurant this could be right up your street. As another example let's say you are a hairdresser, well how about getting a local beautician on site and offering a complete make-over, then maybe throw in some pictures from a photographer. A brilliant gift for someone
Tip 5 - Give something Away: This has some cost associated with it but it is very powerful. Buy a prize, contact your local radio station to promote the free give away and run a competition. If you are an electrician maybe get a gadget at cost price and have that as a prize, or push the boat out, offer a spa weekend as a prize and get the radio to say sponsored by etc. You get the idea. This is brilliant and works really well.
I hope these ideas have sparked up your creative juices, the possibilities are endless you just need to think about it.
