Rich snippets offer an effective way to display structured data in quick and simple way. Google is continuously adding support for rich snippets in order to give users a brief indication of the information contained on a search result item. This allows people to quickly scan results for the content they require without having to jump in and out of pages each time.

In a market where it is best to stand out from the crowd, being able to put these distinctive features on your website can help greatly. This is especially true while it is still a new concept with a proportionately small uptake, allowing your website to look even more distinguished.

Google has had some basic rich snippet features for a while now - users will have seen them in the form of star ratings and numerical quantities for review pages. However, Google has now added support for more formats of rich snippet, which include:

*Recipes - This can be used to display cooking times and an image of the final product. It also utilises the review system as mentioned above.

*People - Websites can display a name and contact details. This is of particular use to social media/networking websites, or websites that feature individual user profile pages.

*Organisations - Display the contact information and geographical location of your business.

It was briefly mentioned that rich snippets can be used as a method of helping you to highlight your website to users in the search engine result pages (SERPs) Christmas rapidly approaching, the introduction of these ecommerce-friendly rich snippets can be used as a major driver for sales. Given that most ecommerce sites already list their products in shopping feeds like the Merchant Center run by Google, it should involve relatively little time and effort to update the product pages to include suitable structured data tags for rich snippets.

Possible changes caused by rich snippets

There are several potential changes that rich snippets may make to your sites success and traffic;

*You may notice a drop in the clickthrough rate from Google's SERPs due to users checking rich snippet summaries.

*The above should cause bounce rates to drop, as actual visitors will know more about the product before they view the page.

*Your site may prove more successful than those above it in the SERPs as your rich snippet product summary catches users' eyes. The opposite may also be said; if you don't bother with rich snippets you may lose sales to websites below you in the rankings that do have them.
