The obvious solution to increased job satisfaction is to provide more money, a nice office, a covered parking spot and maybe something better than stale wrapped sandwiches in the lunchroom.
But the unspoken desire of workers at all levels is for something more, something intangible. Workers want motivation and inspiration from corporate leadership, they also want their job to have meaning. Without it, they merely show up and function.
Every worker - from maintenance to receptionist to customer service representative to supervisor - wants to feel that going to work each day is worthwhile on a level greater than just collecting a paycheck. They're seeking a job with meaning. Where they can connect at a deeper level their intrinsic motivation and purpose with the values and vision of the company they work for.
Great leader's knows this and provide an environment in which every worker has the potential to be successful and be recognized for achieving benchmarks toward success. The motivation may come in the form of tangible prizes or personal recognition before peers.
It may be as simple as the leader's regular visits to all departments and taking time to engage employees in conversation while actually listening more than talking. Employees who feel valued are more motivated to work cooperatively in a team or group. Taking time to understand someone and what makes them come alive can pay dividends, literally, yes it's been proven to have a high impact on the shareholder value.
Some leaders are eloquent speakers who could rally any team to victory - and that's certainly inspiring. Other leaders rely on their actions more than their words to inspire and lead employees. Either style can work. Of course, the fist thing leaders must do is find their own motivation, inspiration and purpose if they expect to impart that to employees in a way that's genuine.
