There are several types of Iguana that exist. Some of the chief types include Green iguanas, Marine iguanas, Basilisk, Chuckwalla, etc.
The green or the common iguana is a herbivorous, arboreal creature. It is found in a widespread geographical belt ranging from Brazil to Paraguay and moving onto Mexico to Caribbean. It is even found in some parts of the United States such as south Florida concentrated as largely feral populations.
It has adapted its locomotive abilities and osmoregulation capacities though being a herbivore in essence. It grows to 1.5 metres in length from head to tail, although a few specimens have grown more than 2 metres it has a body weight of upwards to 20 pounds.
The green Iguana is a preferred pet because of its common calm demeanor and its intense green color. However it requires careful attention during rearing especially the lighting, warmth has to be kept to absolutely perfect as also the cage must be frequently altered for spaciousness which may prove challenging for any amateur aspirant as the nature of care required might be slightly on the demanding side.
They are agile climbers and use their hing legs and awesome grip to land unhurt especially during greater falls from as high as 150 ft. When submerged the iguanas leave all their 4 limbs inside and use their tail to proper powerful strokes.
Male iguanas have femoral spores more prominently than their female counterparts also the dorsal spines are longer and more elaborate in the males compared to the females.
The Marine Iguana (Amblyrhynchus cristatus) is an iguana found in the Galapagos Islands. This Galapagos Islands have been the centre of great discoveries including Darwin's famous giant turtles among others. The iguana found here is known as Marine Galapagos iguana because of its unique ability to forage into the sea at will and for longer hours. Though they are largely concentrated on the rocky shores they can also be equally spotted amidst the mangrove sections as well as the plain parts.
The desert iguana is a blunt creature which can grow up to 16 inches it is plain and whiter in color with light brown stripes present in its back that become slightly larger as you move down the back The pattern gives way to dark brown spots near the thighs and as it progresses towards the tail region. The tail is 1 ½ times longer from snout. The belly is pale. During the breeding season, the sides become pinkish in both sexes which zoologists use as an indication for the start of breeding season.
Basilisk is a common name that covers most of the American lizard family. They have a crest on the tail and on the head part. The most common species is green and brown, reaches a length of three feet (90 cm), and lives in trees. It is harmless. The common basilisk is Basiliscus americanus of the family Iguanidae This name "Basilisk" is the inspiration behind the spiked serpent in the HARRY POTTER series which is more of a snake in the lizard's description.
Chuckwalla is another stout lizard that has United States as its native. It grows to 18 inch and its tail is shorter than others. These chuckwallas are normally brown especially when young with some dark bands and markings. The older counterparts have a reddish brown color. These type of iguanas feed on stuffs like buds, young leaves and also flowers. The common chuckwalla is a Sauromalus obesus in the family of the Iguanidae. It is the most commonly found iguana species in the United States which accounts for other breeds as well.
