The word orthodontics is an old Greek term meaning proper or straight alignment and refers to teeth. When our teeth are out of alignment and crooked the results can be discomfort in the jaw area, pain when chewing, and even headaches. This, along with an unfavourable appearance, can be a source of distress for children and adults before they have orthodontic treatment performed.

Do not wait until you are an adult to have your teeth straightened

Many parents choose to take their children to the dentist at least twice each year for an examination, to have their childs teeth cleaned, and perhaps to have one or more dental cavities filled. Taking good care of ones mouth and teeth is a necessary part of life and beginning early is a good way to promote good dental health for a lifetime. A dentist will examine the mouth tooth by tooth and also ensure that his or her patient has a good bite. When the teeth meet properly it is easier to chew foods, especially meat. When the teeth are out of alignment and do not meet in a scissors bite this can be the cause of much discomfort. A dentist will refer this patient to an orthodontist who specialises in helping patients with the proper alignment of their teeth. This can mean braces, expansion appliances, and various forms of head gear used to align the jaw bones, to move teeth, or for cosmetic purposes to improve the smile and overall appearance of ones teeth.

Cosmetics or reconstructive manipulations help appearance

An orthodontist in the UK undergoes an additional three years of specialised training beyond dentistry and is capable of manipulating the jaw and mouth in order to improve the bite and enable easier chewing. Additionally, they may receive further training in reconstructive surgery to help those who have birth defects or have sustained damage due to an accident. Their patients may undergo extensive therapy to align the jaws and teeth.

Braces have been greatly improved over the years

Orthodontic treatment consists of applying braces in such a way that they gradually shift the alignment of teeth that have been crowded or, occasionally, as a result of a misshapen jaw bone. The length of treatment may be as long as two or three years because the process is deliberately slow and adjustments must be made periodically to insure proper alignment. Children who have the need to wear braces are often embarrassed by the appearance of metal bands around their teeth, resulting in a child who seldom smiles while in public. Todays more modern approach to orthodontic care involves nearly invisible braces made of plastic or ceramic material. They are considered to be a removable appliance and are now called an aligner. Still designed to remain in the mouth twenty four hours a day, they can be removed for cleaning purposes if necessary.

Part time retainers may benefit for many years

Once the orthodontic patient has reached a successful and correct alignment of their teeth they may choose to keep an occasional alignment update through use of a retainer. This appliance can be worn for days, weeks, or months as needed to maintain a proper bite as part of the ongoing orthodontic treatment process.
