Without waste landfills, will American wonder where to throw away over 250 million tons of trash each year? Landfills have become a further source of alternative energy. Thanks to technological marvels, electricity is generated from landfill gases and sold to businesses and municipalities.

Situated in Oregon, the Columbia Ridge Landfill accumulates 6,000 - 8,000 tons per day. About 400,000 tons a year is trained and shipped to Columbia Ridge where it decomposes into methane gas. Afterward, gas is burned to make electricity.

A system of pipes helps collect leachate and methane gas at the Roosevelt Regional Landfill. The current production of methane provides 10 megawatts of electrical power.
