According to statistics, migraine suffers experience episodes anywhere from 1 to 12 times per year. That might not seem like a lot, but when the severity of some migraines can keep a person down for up to several days, it raises the urgency of finding migraine pain relief.
Depending on the severity of the individual migraine headache, there are many different forms of treatment. So, what is in your arsenal?
After speaking with a few family and friends who suffer migraines, I received a variety of answers. Most often, I heard "stress". But, nearly everyone experiences stress, so why doesn't everyone have migraines? If I learn the answer to that, I will let you know.
I also heard about bright lights, missing a meal, drinking alcohol, smoke or strong odors, and for one, during menses almost every single month.
As for what gave those particular individuals pain relief, I also received a number of different answers. Some were obvious. If smoke causes your migraines, don't smoke or stay away from smokers. If you notice a pattern of a migraine when you haven't eaten all day, well then EAT. Simple enough.
But for those who cannot quite determine what the cause or trigger of their migraines are, they most often turned to medications, prescription or over-the-counter. A quick visit to the doctor will afford you a list of the latest medications formulated to fight migraines. If you are comfortable with treating the migraine as opposed to finding the cause and preventing future migraines, I would definitely recommend that option.
But for those who are in search of identifying their triggers, and implementing any lifestyle change that is necessary, I say good for you. With some of the triggers most reported, migraine pain can often be avoided altogether without using medications at all.
Important to note is that women are 3 times more likely to experience migraine headaches. To me, that is a hidden clue that they are avoidable.
