It's Friday night you are wearing your favourite top you get home and notice the most horrible stain on the front, if you cannot get it out you might as well throw it away. However, if you use some nifty tricks you can in most cases get rid of the stain after all your favourite top must be worth it.

Once you have noticed the dreaded misdemeanour the first thing you should do is look at the tag to see how best to clean it and at what temperature. Materials such as wool, cotton, polyester and nylon all react differently to certain types of stains. The type of material it is made from and cleaning instructions will help determine how you are going to tackle the problem.

As many people will tell you when you are trying to get rid of a stain speed is of the essence any longer than 24-48 hours and it will probably be permanent. If you have children or are accident prone you will need a series of weapons at your disposal in preparation for a sudden incident.

You can buy laundry detergents of varying strengths. It is probably best to have several to hand one of which should be for hand wash items. Next a bottle of bleach is very useful although the stuff you use for your toilet is usually too strong, so try and find a colour safe one instead. A professional stain removal stick which can be applied directly to a stain is another useful tool; these can usually be bought from your local supermarket.

Blood is believed by many to be one of the most difficult stains to remove, but as long as there is not a lot you can usually get it out. The best way to deal with this mark is to dab or blot with a dry sponge or cotton cloth to collect as much blood as possible. Next, soak the stain in cold water and then wash using an enzyme based laundry detergent. Once your top has been treated and washed you should air dry, never stick it in a dryer as you may undo some of your hard work. However, if your top is white you can probably use hydrogen peroxide to treat the blood stain. Also always check the tag because if it says dry clean only the best thing to do is just get it to your nearest dry cleaners as soon as possible.

You may like to wear your favourite top and dance the night away in which case it may suffer from less than attractive sweat stains. If this is the case never fear you can combat this stain and still use it to strut your stuff. Again, if you are treating a white top you can use hydrogen peroxide. Also, Boric Acid is a powder which has been used for thousands of years to clean garments and it's great for getting rid of armpit sweat stains.

Wine stains and especially red wine stains are notoriously difficult to remove. But if you dab or blot with a sponge or piece of cotton and then wash it according to the tag you can often get rid of them. It may not come out the first time which means you may want to treat with a powerful stain remover and then wash again.

Remember stain removal is about speed, reading the label and using the right tools at the right time. A good laundry detergent, stain remover and a cotton cloth can go along way when trying to eradicate stubborn stains.
