This modern, increasingly connected world places a great deal of demand on us. Each year the number of people-associates, clients, friends, and relatives-outside of the country that we have to stay in contact with increases. And as the costs of traditional phone rates continue to rise, it is becoming unaffordable. This has left so many of us searching for other ways to make free or even cheap international calls. In the list that follows, we'll examine the pros and cons of some popular options.
1. Instant messaging including voice and video
The best thing about IM is that the software is free to use. The downside is that you need a headset, and it does require a fair amount of technology knowhow. Basic text-based IM is rather simple, but it does get increasingly more complex as you add voice and video services.
2. Skype and similar video conferencing services
An alternative to IM are the various PC to phone and PC to PC services. One of the most popular of these services is Skype. The greatest benefit to Skype is its versatility. It can facilitate voice communications between landlines, mobile lines, and PCs. Skype blends much of what's great about IM, which much of what's great about VoIP services.
3. VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol)
While Skype is technically a VoIP service, we're using VoIP to refer to those home- and office-based services that provide a transparent phone service implementation. In other words, for the end-user, there is little difference between a traditional and VoIP line except that the VoIP line is less expensive, especially concerning cheap international calls.
4. International callback services
An international callback is a valid alternative when no Internet connection is available. When you use an international callback service, they reroute your call in such a way that you take advantage of the cheapest rates available in the world plus their service fee. This is not as cost-effective as the next option over the long-term, but it is useful for isolated uses.
5. Prepaid phone cards
The prepaid phone card is the best non-Internet-based option for those who make calls regularly. The downside to a prepaid phone card is that you have to buy in bulk in order to access the best rates, so it may not make sense for those who call infrequently. However, if you do use it often, prepaid phone cards are a great way to lock in rates for cheap international calls.
