Starting a business, no matter what kind, can be a daunting and difficult task during economic prosperity. So how do you think it would be when the economy is in a spiral downwards? We are amid a 9.7 percent unemployment rate; foreclosures are higher than they have ever been before; companies as well as individuals are going bankrupt every single day.
Daunting as it may seem, highly successful businesses were started during economic recessions and weak economies. Microsoft began in 1975 during an economic depression, so why can't other individuals begin small businesses now, and grow big in the future? The short answer is that individuals can.Â
There are many advantages to beginning a business in a recession. The biggest one is that not many other people are thinking about it because they may be worried about the amount of money it takes to invest, or they do not want to leave their day-job because they may not be able to get another one if the business fails. There are a number of reasons as to why very few businesses start or expand during economic downturns; however, they are all wrong!Â
Why are they wrong? Because if there were not people who started businesses during economic downturns, then there wouldn't be a Bill Gates (one of the wealthiest and powerful people in the world), there wouldn't be a Burger King, there wouldn't be a HP, who began during the worst economic depression in history. And even during recessions, there are always companies that thrive.Â
Internet-based businesses are one of these niches that do extremely well no matter how the economy is doing. Since the beginning of the World Wide Web, more and more people are entering the online community to sell something; whether it be a miracle potion or a get rich quick scheme, a lot of people are profiting off of the internet. So... why can't we all do it? Again, the quick answer is that we all can, if we put our mind to it and believe that we can. However, the key is to offer something to the buyer that actually works and is a good product, because when selling you may be able to make money off of things that, in reality, are of no real value, your time will run out and you will end up back where you started.Â
So what tips should be followed in an opening your own business during a recession?Â
First and foremost, don't decide to leave where you are currently working because if you end up putting all your eggs in one basket, then you may find that the basket ends up being something that nobody is interested in. Second, keep your costs down at the beginning until you begin earning some cash-flow. Third, be unique. Now, this does not mean completely come up with your own invention and start selling it. In actuality, it is better if you surround yourself with like-minded individuals and learn from them. Being unique means selling something that may already be out there, but in a way that the buyer will want to come to you because you are not like everyone else. Lastly, believe in yourself. If you do not believe that you are going to succeed, then you absolutely will not. However, if you continue to push yourself and believe that what you are offering is something of use to people, and then you will succeed; it may not be as fast as you would like, but it will happen.Â
Remember, be responsible and take a chance on yourself.
