Fewer and fewer small companies can afford to pay for marketing services these days, and if you are a small business marketing company it will be hard to stay in business yourself if you do not get any customers. This is indeed the same problem that newspapers are having, their advertising bases has dwindled, along with the amount that the small business advertising customers can afford.
As you know our newspaper industry has suffered from the ultimate double whammy. More of their clients are moving to the Internet, and the economic crisis has put their customers in peril. With this calamity in the news industry, you certainly want to make sure that does not happen to you. At this point it is all about survival.
So, what can a small town marketing company do during a recession so they can make it through 2009 and into the good times in the future? Here is what I'd do, and I realize I am not in the marketing-business, but, I do know a bit about marketing-for-small-businesses. Here are my suggestions:
I would create a flyer today with "al la carte" pricing, of all the services you can do for small businesses that are hurting right now, and I'd keep the prices low. I'd fax this flyer to all the small businesses in the area, and follow up with a phone call. I would divide up the city and flyer 1,000 flyers a day in the mail slots of all the businesses in the six closest suburban cities, and I'd commit to working 17 hours a day to drum up new clients no matter how small.
Indeed, I would recruit everyone in my family to help, and every employee of the company and their family members to help. I'd put together a team and caravan to canvass the areas, dropping the team members off on opposite sides of the street, picking them up at the end, while doing a "U" shape pattern flyering nearby while waiting. The "al la carte" services could be:
Web Design
SEO optimization
Setting up a Blog for their Website
Flyering Services
Marketing Implementation plans
Flyer Designs
Ad Layouts
Business Cards
Magnetic Signs
Etc.
Whatever services that your marketing-firm can do in high volume, that it can do cheap and easy to generate revenue immediately using a low-cost high-volume strategy. All services require upfront payments 50% or more. This will generate immediate cash, real money. Heck, do not be shy? Generate money the old fashioned way to live to fight another day.
