As a business owner and entrepreneur, I am very intrigued by new businesses that take the world by storm and make people instant millionaires. While there numerous businesses that are more conventional and can be related to other existing businesses with minor variations, there are companies that we always hear about that are truly unique. While watching a popular television show on CNBC recently, there was a business owner talking about her company that really caught my attention.
A woman was invited on this popular television show to tell the world about her company and how she has made millions of dollars. She noticed that many products are made for a specific gender only, but the product is really used by both genders. Her company produced hand tools for women. The tools were slightly smaller than conventional tools and came in more feminine colors like pink. The woman's idea was very unique due to the fact that tools are usually made large and cumbersome and with men in mind. Tools are not usually produced for females, since manufacturers typically think that most of their market, including contractors and construction workers, are male. However, there are thousands of female construction workers and women who want to complete projects at home using hand tools, and until now they did not have tools made specifically for them.
The business owner's realization that tools are usually made for men and did not give much consideration to women, led her to success and millions of dollars. This made me think of other products that are marketed and produced specifically for men or women that do not consider the opposite gender. One of the first products I thought of which is usually marketed for women, are candles. People usually think that candles may be made more for women and not men. However, there are thousands if not millions of men who buy candles for their homes every year. With this idea in mind, I searched the internet for candles made and targeted at men. I was surprised to find that someone had the same idea as I did, and a new company was in the works, called Mandles. Mandles is a company that makes "man candles". The candles have scents that a majority of men might enjoy, such as outdoor scents like pine and fresh cut grass. Not only does the company have a great website, but they seem to be selling a large amount of candles.
The two companies mentioned in this article have a certain similarity; they noticed that a product was made for a certain gender and the opposite gender was being left out. By recognizing the untapped market and creating a company in response, they are now making large amounts of money and enjoying the success of their new companies. If you sit down and think about it or simply look around your home, you can easily find products that are made with men or women only in mind. If you could take that same product and modify it slightly where the opposite gender could buy it and enjoy it too, you may have a rich idea. Think about it; are there any products which you buy or enjoy but feel like it is embarrassing for you to buy in public? Maybe you are a man and enjoy the scent of a burning candle, or you are a woman who likes to build furniture but feel intimidated at your local hardware store. Create your own version of a product with this idea in mind and you too could enjoy great success.
