You keep hearing about how tough the times are right now. For those that own a small business things are really tough, its true. Some big stores can offer so many discounts that you can't keep up with them. When regular folks are trying to pinch pennies they will end up going to those big box type store because they get more for the money. Not good news for the little guy.


There are some really good ways to help promote your business that don't take much money just an investment of some time and quick thinking. Word of mouth is one of the best ways to let people know about your business. Don't just limit this word of mouth advertising to your mouth, encourage your employees and customers to talk up your business by using incentive programs to get them to talk up your business in the community. Pass along handfuls of promotional business card magnets for people to hang up around their homes and businesses.


Opening your shop to the public with refreshments and music is a great idea. A grand opening is good, but it would work wonders to host a monthly gathering. I know of a small restaurant that used an off night on a monthly basis to have a singles group meet. You can serve something light with the understanding that people will buy more. Or go crazy and make it a per person price. Maybe each person could pay $ 10 and they get appetizers and a set meal. You would be guaranteed a small party on that night.


A lot of company's like the idea of a trade show. What about starting your own? It could come together under the guise of fundraiser for something in the community. Find a location that will let you use the space for free or very cheaply. You can charge a small amount for people to have a table to set up on. You could ask a local group to sing or play music. People will come out for a fundraiser.


There are many innovative ideas to bring people into your business and keep them coming back. Putting a face on your business with a friendly atmosphere and staff can create the perfect environment for generating new business contacts. People like knowing who they are shopping with, it makes them feel more at home in your business.
