When traveling away from your business you lose some control over your business environment. This loss of control is what many business owners fear and it stops them from ever having extended breaks. No matter what, there will be things out of your control that happen whilst you travel but I'll still show you how you can create a fairly controlled business environment. This is part 2 of a 3-part series.

Creating a controlled environment A controlled environment is one which you know all the variables and can swiftly act if something goes "wrong". You will never perfectly control your business environment - that's impossible - but you can make things easier on yourself. Controlled environments will make traveling away from your business less worriesome.

1. Delete unnecessary online accounts. Every online account you've ever created (forums, web apps, social networks etc) is potentially another point of entry for someone looking to harm your business. Limiting these accounts is a great way to secure your business and make sure your brand isn't harmed by some script kiddie.

Action: Login to online accounts you don't use and delete them. If you can't delete them then remove all personal data, change the password to a random string of characters and use mailinator.com to create a disposable email address for the account.

2. Limit variety of software. For all my sites I use Wordpress to manage content. This allows me to easily monitor news of important upgrades and allows me to have a greater depth and understanding of Wordpress itself. Try to limit the variety of applications you have installed on your website and your environment will be further under your control.

3. Stick with single companies. Avoid using more than one host or domain name provider. Find companies that are reliable and stick with them. Having to deal with multiple hosting/domain accounts can become confusing and messy and it certainly limits your overall control of the situation.
