We find life's simple joys in simple things like a walk on the beach, or an afternoon basking in the sun with a child-hood favorite like vanilla ice cream in one hand and a romantic novel in the other. These are the times when we realize how much our career-permeated consciousness is in dire need of earthy things to slow down our "all work, no play" mentality.
Stress from work is one of the main causes of migraines and tension in the muscles. If you suffer from these conditions, it may seem difficult to relax, but you should truly consider using your vacation time to take a vacation to a beach or natural scenic spot where you could enjoy fresh air instead of air-conditioning.
For the woman who feels like it's almost impossible to detach herself from the convenience of technology, and being in remote areas equates to being "boring," think again. You might want to take pleasure in other activities that resemble what you usually do back at home. Is the word "shopping" potent enough to excite your imagination? I haven't met many women who dislike shopping. We'll brave endless lines and swelling toes from too much walking with those stilettos on just to experience the thrill of a good find.
And if you need another excuse, shopping is exercise! And for those of us who sit at desks the majority of the time, power walking through an interesting mall or market can be a fun and challenging routine! Shopping thrills women who fancy fashion, and can be a simply fun way to enjoy yourself on a week long getaway. Especially if you're in a touristy area that caters to women looking for special things to buy.
As a tourist, I have encountered several decent novelty boutiques, usually situated before you arrive at your specific destination. There is always something handcrafted, just like in Peru, my all-time favorite destination. Every region of Peru has its mainstream products.
Natural elements like glass, shells, dried gourds, wood and seeds are commonly seen, and turned into pleasing ornaments, key chains, accents and accessories. Wearing any jewelry from these materials provides that "beachy" vibe. It makes me reminisce once in a while the beauty of Lake Titicaca and hanging out in the breezy beaches of Piura and Trujillo. Never have I experienced such wonderful and interesting shopping options than I did in Peru.
An animal print tunic, which is never forgotten whenever I go somewhere else, is well-complemented with a dried gourd necklace and a pendant necklace made from Peruvian turquoise which by the way, were bought from a local artisan's shop. The use of gourds has been a part of Peru's history and I'm guessing it's here to stay forever.
On the other hand, Peruvian Turquoise or Chrysocolla plays a significant role as it is known to provide healing and tranquility. Either of these elements could serve as Peru's emblem when it comes to jewelry, but there are several other materials you'll often find that are equally beautiful when used in Peruvian jewelry.
These include Huayruro seeds and butterfly wings from the Amazon rain forest, obsidian glass from the mountains, and spondylus shells from the sea. Layering pieces of jewelry and accessories from these natural elements can give you that cool-mixed feel.
Contrary to some preconceptions about how certain jewelry can only be worn in certain settings, accessories embellished with natural elements are not only appropriate for a wild safari, in the jungle or on the beach. In fact, even at work in the office you'd be surprised how these interesting jewelry pieces receive rave reviews. Velvet wardrobes that are used to being partnered with lavish gold accessories can be blended with carved gourd and silver. Tweed jackets that look as dainty as ever with flirty print dresses, I'm sure wouldn't mind being matched with chrysocolla and silver.
Get extra-feminine flair as you mix and match office staples with your handcrafted jewelry. Only for work and not for play? Of course not! They could also double up as a new twist your leather pants and heels on a night-out with friends, to tone down the edginess. Just put on your wardrobe staple and finish it off with layers of handcrafted jewelry pieces.
If you think you need to be a slender fashion-magazine-like model to fit in these exotic accessories, then why don't you try one on and see it for yourself? Although it helps to have that society-dictated idealism of what beauty is, natural is natural. And if you happen to have a pear-shaped body, apple type, ruler, or cone, it really doesn't matter. Being curious enough to try one on, will give you a whole new world of stylish possibilities.
The best part about the handcrafted jewelry I own from Peru and other exotic places is that each time I wear it, it brings back memories of the amazing trips I've taken. Even as I sit at my desk and finish a boring report or spreadsheet, I will catch a glance of my Huayruro seed bracelet and immediately smile thinking of the colorful and exotic Peruvian landscape, and the breathtaking sight of Machu Picchu.
If you're stuck in a rut at work and feel like "exotic" is not even a part of your vocabulary, consider taking a trip to somewhere "remote" and you are bound to see things in a new light, even after you return!
