Leukemia is cancer which starts in bone marrow. In leukemia, bone marrow produces excessive quantity of immature or abnormal blood cells. This problem mostly occurs with white blood cells. Leukemia is classified into four sub types.
Bone marrow initially contains stem cells. These stems cells grow up and form red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Stem cells are not directly converted into normal blood cells. Stem cells are first converted into lymphocytic and myeloid cells. Platelets and red blood cells are formed from myeloid cells. White cells have many sub types. These types are formed from both lymphocytic and myeloid cells. Leukemia is caused by problem in DNA of either lymphocyte cells or myeloid cells. So the root causes of leukemia are these two cell types. If there is problem in lymphocytes, then caused leukemia is called Lymphoblastic leukemia. And if there the problem is in myeloid cells then leukemia is celled Myelogenous Leukemia.
Primarily leukemia is categorized into Lymphoblastic leukemia and Myelogenous Leukemia. These two types are sub divided into acute and chronic stages. So the final four types of leukemia include acute Lymphoblastic leukemia, chronic Lymphoblastic leukemia, acute Myelogenous Leukemia and chronic Myelogenous Leukemia.
What is meant by acute and chronic? If the abnormal cells at initial stage, the leukemia is said to be in acute stage. But if the abnormal cells are developed to some extend but still immature, the caused leukemia is said chronic. Acute leukemia becomes fatal in short time. It should be treated immediately while chronic leukemia can be examined for some time before treatment.
Symptoms of all leukemia types are similar. Common symptoms of leukemia include swelling in lymph nodes, tiredness, weight loss, tiny red spot on body, pain in bones. Remember generally we can not detect leukemia ourselves. Only a doctor can diagnose it with the help of some medical tests.
