Reverse osmosis is a liquid filtration method which removes large atomic molecules from smaller molecules by forcing the liquid through a membrane at a high pressure with pores just big enough to allow the small molecules to pass through them. The semi-permeable membrane used in reverse osmosis contains tiny pores through which water can flow.

The small pores of this membrane will not allow organic compounds such as salt and other naturally occurring minerals, which generally have a larger molecular composition than water. The pores are also restrictive to bacteria and disease-causing pathogens. It means that reverse osmosis is effective at desalinating water and providing mineral-free water for use in photo or print shops.

It is also effective at providing pathogen-free water. Which means it removes the things that will harm our bodies. In areas not receiving municipally treated water or at particular risk of waterborne diseases, reverse osmosis is an ideal process of contaminant removal. Places like rural Africa and Mumbai, India are more at risk for these water-borne pathogens than communities that have access to fresh water.  Reverse osmosis is often used in commercial and residential water filtration. It is also one of the methods used to desalinate seawater or remove the salt from the seawater making it healthy to drink.

Osmosis, by the way, is why if you ever get stranded in the ocean, is why drinking salty seawater will kill you. When you ingest salty water in your stomach, the pressure from the osmotic activity begins drawing water out of your body to try to dilute the salt in your stomach. Eventually, you dehydrate and die.

Maybe one day in this great technological age we are in, portable RO filters will be able to save the lives of those humans that get lost at sea and give them a fighting chance for survival.
