Some people swear by flaxseed as the best source of Omega 3 fatty acids. However flaxseed has the form of Omega 3 called ALA. This needs to be converted by the body over to DHA and EPA. Now this process does not always happen efficiently, if you are old or in poor health. Which means that some people may not be getting the benefits of ALA if their body does not convert it.
The best source of Omega 3 fatty acids as far as we are concerned is fish. But then not all fish are created equal. Some species of fish have more fatty acids than others. DHA is very important for your brain development and your cardiovascular health.
Your brain is composed of some sixty percent fat. Twenty grams of that is DHA fatty acid. Our brain uses a lot of DHA. So we need to replace these Omega 3 fatty acids on a regular basis.
Now one of the things about fish that you need to know is that fish these days contain contaminants such as mercury, lead and toxins such as PCBs etc. this is because the worlds oceans are polluted with industrial waste and some of them with natural pollution.
One of the ways of getting around this is to take a supplement of Omega 3 fish oils that have been purified by a process called molecular distillation which removes the heavy metals and the toxins. This process purifies the oil by weight, giving you the purest oil you can buy. Once this oil has been put in soft gel capsules the air can not get to it and it remains fresh.
The fish source used by the manufacturer that we buy our fish oil from is the Hoki, a fish native to the Southern Ocean off the coast of New Zealand. These fish are naturally high in Omega 3 fatty acids because of their diet which consists of algae and plankton.
These fish are processed close by to where they are landed to ensure that their oil is fresh. Some companies buy their oil by the tanker load from other countries. Their oil is not always fresh. Because Hoki are naturally high in Omega 3s we recommend the purified Omega 3 /DHA oil from this fish.
