There are many types of ground moles. Moles belong to a group of rodents but are mammals and are called insectivorous, which are many, and you can distinguish them from the shrews, gophers and voles by their naked pointed noses that protrude at their mouth. They have small ears and eyes which are masked by fur and their feet are spade like and their much wide than their length and have strong claws. The fur on their skin is either grey or fluffy brown. Their tails are between one to nine inches long and are furless and they are very bright pink in color.
It is advisable to note that moles are blind and do not see at all. Their small eyes are covered with a thick coating of skin. Their sensitive snout guides them and acts as their sense of sight. It is their sense of smell and the balance of their tail which makes the mole able to find its way underground surprisingly well, despite its blindness.
Moles are of various sizes depending on the region they are found and their type. A garden mole grows to between five to eight inches long. Garden moles are found in almost all the regions of America. There is one large breed that is found in North America and it measures over nine inches in length. The smallest of the breed measures about five inches.
There is a wide range of species of moles which are:
⢠Hairy tailed moles -These moles are more active and make their tunnels during the day. They are found in soils that are well drained, these moles look for food at night and you will come across them in the evening hours.
⢠Eastern mole -These moles makes two types of tunnels: nesting tunnels, which are where they stay most of the time and are found under tree roots filled with leaves and grasses (probably for their comfort) and the feeding tunnel, which lead to feeding areas. The mole is found where there are sand and moist soils.
⢠Broad footed mole-This mole is active throughout the year but is more active after the rains. The mole guards its burrows from any other rodents, and the burrows and tunnels are filled with leaves and grass. This species prefers moist soils.
⢠Star nosed mole -This species seldom digs tunnels and is found in poorly drained soils and will be found in marshes, river banks and on peat lands and ponds. Its nest, therefore, has its mouth in the water. And since it is a good swimmer it looks for its food in the water. These are social animals and will share their burrows with other moles.
⢠Coast mole -This mole is found in sandy moist soils and in the gravel. This mole is rare and will have its burrow filled with rough coarse grass.
⢠Townsend's mole - This type of mole also makes two types of tunnels and is found in moist lowland loamy soils. They have two tunnels leading to feeding areas and those leading to its habitat area.
