All the many types of carpet look and feel different from each other. If you go into a carpet store with little knowledge of the different carpeting styles, you will be confused by all the choices. Here is a small sampling of the selections you might find.

1. Saxony

The Saxony types of carpet include cut pile and textured cut pile. Both are made of straight fibers that are cut at the top either straight off, or at varying heights in the case of the textured Saxony. The look is traditional and elegant. Textured Saxony is more informal, and it catches light and shadow more distinctly.

2. Berber

Berber loop-pile types of carpet are made to look like wool carpets, with loops of yarn. The effect is a soft carpet that springs back when stepped on or run over with a vacuum. Berber provides a designer look that goes well in modern or cottage-style rooms. There are also cut pile Berbers now.

3. Cut and Loop

Cut and loop types of carpet are usually made with multiple colors in them. They are constructed with some cut fibers and some looped fibers for varying heights and light reflection. They tend to hold their nap level well between vacuuming. Cut and loop carpet is an attractive choice in bold or muted color combinations.

4. Textured Plush

Textured plush is one of the easiest types of carpet to maintain in a busy household. It has a low cut pile that is soft and spread out to fill up the spaces between fibers. It is attractive and stands up well to repeat vacuuming.

5. Frieze

Frieze carpeting has just become one of the popular types of carpeting in recent years. It has a casual, knobby appearance that provides visual interest in the room. Another reason it is becoming so well-liked is that it is very durable, and can be used in high traffic areas in the home.

6. Patterned Carpet

Patterned carpet may have separate patches of different pile levels, alternating cut or looped pile, or alternating naps. The effect is a pattern that can be both seen and felt. Patterned types of carpet can come in multi-colored styles or single colors. The way the carpet is constructed makes it less susceptible to obvious appearances of shoe prints and vacuuming marks.

7. Commercial Loop

Commercial loop carpets are made to be strong and able to withstand high volumes of tough traffic. They are constructed of loops, usually short loops. They come in a variety of colors. When you are getting ready to remodel your home, you will probably choose among the other types of carpet.
