I know a lot of freelancers who are frustrated lately by the lack of good job opportunities online. They are competing with individuals overseas in the Philippines and other locations that systematically underbidding therefore crashing the local US market. I am here to tell you that you can still win big name clients. You just have to be methodical with your bidding methods and most importantly represent yourself professionally.
Posting and Bidding
Before you even bid on a project you need to have several things in order including a great proposal/cover letter. Spend about half an hour really thinking about what you would want to hear from a potential employee if you were on the hiring end. I always break my proposals up into 3-4 sections. Your proposal should look like this:
Introduction
Your introduction should state who you are, the name of your business, and what your specialized skill set is and/or why you are bidding on their project. This can be as little as 2-3 sentences.
Body
Your body needs to include a brief paragraph outlining your background and why your specialized skill set fits with the job that they are hiring for. The next section of your body section needs to state your extensive skill set in computers, graphics, telemarketing, customer services, programming or whatever you are trying to sell them. This should be the wow factor of your bid. As in you want the potential client to say wow I have got to hire this individual.
Closing
Your closing should be 2-3 paragraphs again restating why you are the right person for their company, how you are going to go above and beyond to make their project special, and thanking them for their time. At this point I always close my bid with my name, email address, website address, and phone number.
I guarantee you that half of the people who look at your bid and want to speak with you further will call you directly. So it is imperative you include this info. Also make absolutely sure that you include at least a PowerPoint about your company, a resume, or even some references. You have now done something that 95% percent of your competition has not. And that is set yourself apart from the competition as the go to business in your industry of choice.
If you follow these easy steps listed above I guarantee you will win twice as many projects as the guy next to you. Good luck!
